Knob and Tube Replacements

What is knob and tube:

Knob and tube is the oldest form of residential wiring for electricity.  Knob and tube is a cloth covered wire that is supported by ceramic knobs in joist or stud spaces and ceramic tubes where it passes through a stud or joist.  It was state of the art when it was installed between 1880 up until the early 1950’s or so.  It was designed to handle the homes electrical needs at the time, now unfortunately it is not sufficient with all of today’s electronics.  

Reasons to replace:

Knob and tube was meant to be cooled by the air space it occupied in open attics and wall cavities.  With today’s rising heating and cooling cost, many homes are being re-insulated thus causing the wires to overheat and becoming a possible fire hazard.  This is the reason most insurance companies have a problem with this form of wiring.  Also, it is impossible to ground this system.  This leaves expensive electronic such as TV’s, computers and appliances vulnerable to possible damage.
